The name is a derivative of the separation of the indoor and outdoor components of the HVAC system. The outdoor unit includes what is generally thought of as the air-conditioner. Like their larger counterparts, the ductless mini-split systems have almost the same mechanical setup. The major difference is that multiple air-handling units are installed in different rooms or zones throughout the facility and therefore do not rely on a major network of ducts.
